If your Medicare Advantage Plan is not renewing you are not alone. Over 150,000 are said to be needing to find a new plan in Minnesota alone this year. (2026). Because of the current situation many of the insurance carriers are deciding not to pay or compensate the many local agents and brokers who spend their time and resources to help you members select a plan for the coming year. This puts all of us in a difficult position. Here are a couple of things to consider as options for you for the coming year.
1) Consider getting a Medicare Supplement or Medi-Gap plan. While premiums you pay are often higher than a typical "Advantage" plan, the benefits are no network issues. (You can usually see any provider that takes Medicare). Also, your out of pocket expenses are much less than a Medicare Advantage plan. The drawbacks are that typically you will not have the ancillary benefits included that you may enjoy like eyewear allowance, dental coverage, OTC allowance, etc.
2) Select a new Medicare Advantage Plan. While most insurance providers are not compensating your agent or broker you can still enroll in a plan by shopping yourself and doing much of the leg-work on you own. Primary concerns are: Are the providers you want to access in the insurance company's network? If not what are the added costs to go "out of network"? Prescription (Rx) Costs: If you take any medications that are not covered by the new plan, or covered on a high cost tier, you may have high drug costs for 2026.
Tip: Go to www.medicare.gov and open an account and add your prescriptions and providers so you can see which plans will offer the best options. You can see an estimate of all plans available in your area sorted by premium and estimated Rx cost.
Resource: Your agent can send you a link to sign up on line and you can retain your agent for a hopefully more stable Medicare market in the coming years.
If your insurance carrier is going to continue service in 2026 you may want to stay with them for the coming year. You should have already received an "Annual Notice of Change" or ANOC letter that shows your current plan, and the same plan for the coming year. Likely you will see either an increase in premium or an increase in your "out-of-pocket" costs or both.
If you are comfortable staying with that plan and insurance carrier you don't need to do anything more. If you would like to change plans within that same insurance carrier give us a call and we can help you.
